Outerlink and Sterling Helicopter team on Air IP STC’s

Outerlink has teamed with Sterling Helicopter on developing STC’s for the new Outerlink Air IP router that provides unparalleled access to the internet from helicopters. With dual-band Wi-Fi throughout the cabin passengers have a uniquely stable connection to the internet across multiple networks giving them the power they need for business, medical, law enforcement, and firefighting. The Air IP system is designed to allow multiple users to access the internet at the same time while maintaining a digital throughput of typically 10 Mbps for each user.

With the constant need for network security, the Air IP offers IPSEC security and the ability to create and maintain a VPN built for the individual customer. This level of network security will allow for streaming highly secure video from law enforcement helicopters as well as conducting highly confidential meetings and email correspondence.

Outerlink teamed with Sterling Helicopter of Croydon, PA to develop the initial STC on the AW139 because of their keen focus on keeping the installers needs in mind. As an FAA repair facility Sterling deals with many product STCs and is well aware of the pitfalls facing the mechanics performing the installations and maintenance. Jason Smith, General Manager of Sterling said “we were eager to participate in the STC development for what we see as a truly revolutionary product in our industry and Outerlink brings a time-tested reputation for building and supporting high-quality products and services.” Jason went on to say “ The Air IP is exactly the product our corporate and law enforcement customers have been asking for and we had the opportunity to work along with Outerlink to ensure this product and installation met the demanding standards our customers have come to expect from Sterling”.

Jeff Warner, VP of Outerlink said “Sterling has always been a leader in the helicopter industry and came to us searching for an innovative solution to meet today’s needs for true broadband connectivity for rotorcraft. It took a number of years to develop a platform that can provide a solid communication link that possessed all the security features the customers had to have. We went beyond the immediate need and have incorporated Iridium tracking and SBD communication and provisioned for a number of future features.”

Both Sterling and Outerlink will be attending APSCON 2022 in Reno, NV offering to help law enforcement and firefighting operators the ability to easily stream video to their respective operational centers.
